Gender: Male.

History: wiki link

Personality: The first thing to understanding Naesala is the realization of the fact that he was a ruler who was never intended to become king. The fact that he did so at the cost of losing most of his family to a curse, however, left a profound mark on his soul, transforming him from a kind and energetic child into a reserved and manipulative man. Driven by the fear of that curse and it's potential activation at any time drove him to all kinds of desperations in order to protect his people from it. This included betraying his friends, murdering his kinsmen and selling his people out as mercenaries in order to keep their kingdom afloat economically. All of this he did while keeping the knowledge of that curse to himself, never burdening anyone else with it's terror or the rapidly rising amount of blood on his hands.

It was these actions that led to a conflict within himself, between that of his own desires and the king within him that refused to not give his everything for his country. A personal battle that was often reflected in his actions of desperately trying to drive away his companions to keep them safe, while also maintaining a connection in order to use them if necessary. Though the curse was eventually removed through his own actions and some of that horror healed by the love of Princess Leanne of the Herons, the damage to his innocence and naiveity remained, and likely always will. Because of that, he will always be reserved and manipulative, seeing potential danger in every shadow. He will also always be incredibly devoted and protective of the ones he loves, even if that means sacrificing his own dignity and pride to keep them safe.

As a man, Naesala is worthless. He is greedy, dishonorable and untrustworthy. He acts without regard for seemingly anyone else but himself and turns on the hand that feeds him as soon as another becomes available. Above all else, he is annoying. His manner is cocky and arrogant and it is almost as if he lives to pick fun at another person's expense. When he isn't scheming to get a reaction from you, he's laughing because he already has. His companions and friends fare little better, even though he treasures them.

As a king, Naesala is everything. He sacrifices his honor, dignity and relations for the sake of his people and his nation. There is no low he won't stoop to if it means his people will fare better for it. He will, and has, murdered the innocent, stolen from the poor and betrayed the trusting for the betterment of his country. What is dangerous however is that when he is a king, he destroys himself as a man. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately,) because he no longer holds this role, trying to find the good in him has become a lot more difficult lately. While there is no mistake that it exists, most people will never realize that because he is too busy covering it up with smiles and lies.

Fears: The thing Naesala fears the most, despite the fact that it's no longer possible, is the Blood Pact: a contract his father once signed that doomed him and his people to the servitude of a human senator. Because of the Blood Pact, he saw thousands of his family, friends and kinsmen drop dead within days without a single mark on their body. Though he eventually severed the contract many years later, the scars it left on his psyche still remain and to this day it is the one thing that can drive him to the ultimate desperation of murder and betrayal.

Beyond that, his fears become fairly standard for anyone who isn't completely evil. He fears the death of his precious friends, the Herons Reyson and Leanne, as well as his old caretaker Nealuchi. He worries for the people of Kilvas and, by automatic extension, the rest of the Bird Tribes who might be massacred by the humans who surround them. He worries that the new Bird King, Tibarn, will be a fool and get himself trapped in another Blood Pact, endangering all of the previously mentioned and then some.

He's afraid of losing all of his hair and going bald before his time. (He's rather vain.)

Weaknesses: In terms of physical weakness, Naesala is extremely vulnerable to projectile attacks. Arrows, bullets, lasers... anything that is advantageous against flying enemies will take him down fairly quickly should they manage to hit. He is also quite susceptible to wind magic as that can wreak havoc with his ability to fly and is difficult for him to dodge unlike fire or lightning.

In regards to typical weaknesses, Naesala is a raven Laguz and, as such, carries certain weaknesses a raven might, such as his affinity for all things shiny. Material wealth (coins, gems and the like) will have the greatest effect as that appeals to both his human and animal side but just about anything that sparkles will catch his eye. Bits of glass, shiny rocks, bottle caps... if it gleams, he'll desire it. The more pretty and valuable it is, the harder it will become for him to resist.

Being of slender build, it's expected that Naesala also has a fairly poor tolerance for alcohol. He can manage a few glasses of wine just fine but anything extensive will get him dizzy and loose-tongued, which is quite a feat to manage when he's sober. He's also susceptible to drugs or experiments that wreak havoc with his body make-up. As a shape-shifter, his powers depend heavily on everything being in "working order" so to speak. Changing that can severely cripple his fighting abilities.

It is also possible to draw out his animal side so that it overwhelms his human sensibility, turning him into a mindless creature that attacks everything it sees. This has already been seen being achieved through the use of drugs, spells, experimentation and torture in his canon. Given Naesala's extremely strong mental will and cunning, it's assumed that he will be harder to break than most but it is manageable.

Mundane Strengths/Abilities: Formerly the king of Kilvas, Naesala is a raven and one of, if not the, most cunning member of the laguz tribes. The laguz are shapeshifting beings, known as the "sons of strength" for their superior might in comparison to the beorcs(/humans), who are known as the "sons of wisdom." Despite that myth, however, Naesala has a reputation for being one of the most intelligent and manipulative creatures on Tellius. He has a talent for spotting weaknesses in both friend and foe alike and often uses this skill to get what he wants, regardless of those who are trampled along the way.

As a laguz, Naesala possesses the skill to shift from a winged human to a large raven. In the latter form, he is both swifter and more mobile than his hawk or heron brothers. Though a raven's strength cannot be compared to a hawk's or a tiger's, as a laguz he will always be stronger than the blade or fist of a beorc. He is, however, fatally weak to projectile weapons, such as a bow or crossbow. (And in that line of thinking, a gun.) One well aimed shot from such a weapon is more than enough to kill him like the rest of the bird tribe, royalty or not.

Several other skills are as follows: he can create massive bursts of wind from his wings (to compensate for the maelstrom ability), he has remarkably fast reflexes, able to dodge and counter in the blink of an eye (RP translated skill vantage) and he also possesses a skill called formshift, which is unique to laguz of royal blood. While normally a laguz must eventually revert back to their human form, Naesala is able to hold his form indefinitely, needing neither rest nor respite from his raven shape.

All this aside, these skills can only really take effect or be worthwhile enough in his bird form. As a humanoid, he is much more fragile and easily felled.

Sensitivity/Magical Ability: While it may seem at times that many of Naesala's abilities are magical, there is nothing he can actually do that qualifies as "supernatural" in his world. He cannot cast spells, see the dead or heal the wounded with a wave of his hand. To that end, when it comes to the spiritual aspects of sensing the dead or interacting with non-natural things, he's as hapless as your average human being.

Supply List: The clothes on his back, one elixir (a potent healing item) and a single shiny coin.

Sample RP post: Too. Damn. Tight!

Naesala shot up in bed with a curse and a rigid jaw from soundless screams. His wings, rigid with anxiety, had flared as far as this tiny, cramped room would allow and sent a lamp flying through the air to shatter into a million pieces against a wall. His bedsheet which had been lain haphazardly over his body was now tangled in the extended apparitions, forcing Naesala to calm himself enough to unravel the mess. Not that it was easy, not from that dream no.

He'd dreamt of Lekain and a metal cage that wove itself into existence around his body, shrinking slowly as his people fell one by one in horrible, gruesome deaths. Of strong, scarred and calloused hands closing around his throat and choking him as apathetic emerald eyes gazed on dispassionately. All this while a gentle face, one he held so dear in his heart, turned away from him before he expelled his last breath and fell into darkness.

It was a hellish nightmare, one with enough real circumstance to have made it possible. As Naesala slid the last expanse of the white cloth from his wings, he slowly retracted them and glanced dully at his room. Nothing but metal and strange, foreign technology. This was no place for anyone to exist peaceably, though others seemed to make light of their circumstance. How like the human race to be so at ease, surrounded by a metal prison.

Naesala would never say as much aloud, but he longed for the fresh ocean breezes and ragged mountain tops of Kilvas. Even after his abdication, as an ambassador he had always been able to stop by his homeland once in a while, if only for a brief amount of time. Such visits had always been nothing short of perfect for the former king. For a moment, to soothe his uneasiness caused by the nightmare, he allowed himself that fantasy. Of returning home and being greeted by people who still loved him despite what he had done. Of smiling faces, laughter and flowers being dropped into his hair as his kin told them of their daily life. What food was in season, who had just mated, the recent antics of their young...

But that life was no longer a possibility, simply a form of entertainment on better nights. Nights where he didn't dream about that dead dastard Lekain. Honestly, just thinking about the human was enough to literally ruffle Naesala's feathers until his wings looked as fat as the deceased senator himself. It was a train of thought that he'd rather avoid entirely, even if thinking of him did fuel another favorite daydream of his. He would never forget the day when they faced off against Lekain at long last within the tower. Especially when you considered his expression as he died an agonizing death.

No, that particular memory would always be remembered fondly.

Realizing he bore a particularly vicious smirk upon his lips, Naesala rubbed his nose thoughtfully. Such an expression wasn't something he wanted just anyone to see, it would ruin his wonderful reputation for certain. Running his fingers raggedly through his hair, he finally set his blanket aside and stood, seeking his clothes in the darkness with a practiced sigh of exasperation. Perhaps he would see who else was troubled in their sleep tonight, enough to be up and about as he was. Surely teasing these malformed and misshapen creatures would put him in a better mood.
